Policy makers: national, state and Jeffco
All public schools are governed by citizens elected at many levels of government: national state and local. Together they determine funding, pass laws, and develop policies, which impact our schools. It is a highly political and politicized process. In our democratic society, all citizens are encouraged to exercise their Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly to impact the political process. Because JCEA believes that every educational decision is ultimately a political decision, we encourage member participation in the political process. We also seek to inform the voting public by making "recommendations" on candidates and issues we believe "measure up" in support of public schools and our organizational values. This is done through our bipartisan small donor committee, JCEA-SDC. This program is supported by voluntary member contributions. No members dues dollars are ever used for partisan political activity. Additional information about the JCEA-SCD can be found on our member-only pages: click here. A similar process is also used by both CEA and NEA in making recommendations in state and national elections. You can read the Association's "measure up" issues by clicking here!

Please note: Election laws do not allow the Association to post our list of "recommended" candidates and issues on this "public" website. Members may get that information by visiting the "policy makers" page on our member-only site. We also publish that information in the Insight and through direct mail to our members. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

CEA's 2010 Legislative Agenda : Each year CEA adopts a "Legislative Agenda" that directs Association activities in the Colorado legislature. You can download a copy of that agenda by clicking here! Jeffco Schools Legislative Forum: Public education in Jefferson County has a strong advocate in the Jeffco Schools Legislative Forum. Perhaps the only school district group of its kind in the nation, its members track proposed legislation and lobby state legislators from Jefferson County. It has a steering committee that meets weekly in a roundtable format to discuss pending legislation. Each group presents its position (support, oppose or monitor), and together the members try to reach consensus.
The forum's liaison teams then meet several times with their assigned state legislators from Jefferson County during the legislative session to discuss and advocate for consensus positions. To find out the Forum's position on current legislation, click here!
Great Education Colorado (formerly called Colorado Protectors of Public Schools), is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization of public school supporters, which advocates for adequate funding for K-12 education in Colorado. The organization's main focus is on informing public school supporters about critical issues in school funding through its web-site, newsletters, and events. Great Education Colorado, launched in 2005, also works with its supporters to empower them to be vocal advocates for Colorado's public schools. Phone: (303) 722-5901. - JCEA's Great Pumpkin Rally: A JCEA traditions!
It's a grea t polticial tradition! During election years--usually on a beautiful Saturday October morning--hundreds of JCEA campaign volunteers rally and walk precincts for Association recommended candidates and ballot issues.
These rallies are a powerful example of how Jeffco teachers work to promote pro-public education candidates and ballot issues. It's an example of what we can do by working together for a cause we believe in. It's about the Power of Us!
Our Great Pumpkin is CEA staff member Joan Holden.
On February 23, 2003, 'The People Spoke'
On February 23, 2003, CEA hosted a rally in support of full funding for Colorado's public schools and Amendment 23, a constitutional amendment that sets annual school funding at a rate of the cost-of-living plus one percent for the next ten years. Colorado voters approved the amendment to make up for a decade ofuunderfunded, recognizing the state ranked 45th in education funding. Leaders of the state legislature indicated they did not agree with this constitutional mandate and were hesitant to fully fund the public schools.
