Helping Kids Thrive: Our annual Free! parenting conference: Have you ever wondered why life is easier for some kids than others? Why some kids involve themselves in dangerous activities and others avoid them? Why some 'beat the odds' and others don't? Get some answers at the 18th annual Helping Kids Thrive (HKT) parenting conferences on November 13 at Lakewood High School. HKT provides positive, practical, empowering support for parents to help children reach their full potential. We promise you will receive hands-on, practical skills and information you can use immediately to help your children "thrive." HKT is presented by Jefferson Center for Mental Health. Major funding is provided by the Jefferson County Education Association (JCEA). JCEA is proud of the continuous leadership it has provided in this area since 1985. Watch for registration information this fall.

Good News Coalition strengthens sense of community: The mission of the GNC is to bring Jefferson County citizens together to celebrate the positive happenings and spiritual values that link our diverse communities. JCEA is an active participant and proud sponsor of this event. Next year the celebration is tentatively scheduled for April 28. Watch for additional information in the spring.

Great Education Colorado (formerly called Colorado Protectors of Public Schools), is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization of public school supporters, which advocates for adequate funding for K-12 education in Colorado. The organization's main focus is on informing public school supporters about critical issues in school funding through its web-site, newsletters, and events. Great Education Colorado, launched in 2005, also works with its supporters to empower them to be vocal advocates for Colorado's public schools. Phone: (303) 722-5901. Helping Children Cope with Trauma & Tragedy: Adults and children react to trauma and tragedy in very different ways. The Association offers a variety of resources to help you talk to your child about what's going on in their world. Click here!

JCEA's Professional Tutor Referral Service: Our unique tutorial service is designed to provide parents with a list of competent teachers who know how to help students who may be falling behind in their school work or may just be seeking academic enrichment. To become tutors, teachers must meet or exceed performance expectations through the school district's teacher evaluation process, must be a member of their professional association (JCEA), and must sign a pledge to honor the "Code of Ethics of the Education Profession," as well as related school board policies. JCEA's role in this process is to provide you appropriate information. Your job is to choose the best possible tutor for your child. For more information, call us at 303- 232-6405.

Shaping Tomorrow Today: JCEA's community newsletter is published as needed throughout the year. You can view and download archived .pdf files of Shaping Tomorrow Today by clicking here!

'Parents as Partners': Publications & Welcoming Environment (W.E.): The Parents as Partners project is the result of continuing collaboration between JCEA, Jeffco Council PTA and the school district. It is based on the belief that parents, teachers and schools all have the same goal: that your child has a successful school year. The best way to achieve that is to work together. Why? Because research proves that children whose parents are actively involved in their schools do better in schools and in life. Parenting information is presented in "tool kit" form. Currently, it includes information on discipline, homework, parent-teacher conferences, problems at school, report cards, testing, school transitions, and resources. You can download the "Parent Involvement Tool Kit" as a .pdf file by clicking here!

Our research into parental and family involvement pointed out the need to do a better job of creating a more inviting —or welcoming environment —in every school. So, we created the W.E. Program. Supported by the JPS Strategic Plan, the W.E. program is designed to make schools more inviting places for all. To access resource information, click here! If you are a parent or a member of the community and you want to get involved, contact your local PTA and/or your school principal. JCEA has now developed W.E. promotional posters for schools. You can download the:

  1. Black & white poster (letter size), or
  2. Color poster
School & Community—Linking for Learning: The goal of the Linking for Learning project is simple and straight forward – to create for the total community, “inviting” schools in which students want to learn, school employees want to work, and all citizens feel welcome. The project is aligned with the school district’s strategic plan and the Welcoming Environment program. It is a critical element in our mutual efforts to increase meaningful parental involvement. It's primary focused is on enabling schools to create volunteer programs to improve student learning. It's secondary focus is about how best ot involve our business and senior communities. Program materials are below:

Linking for Learning tool kit: everything you need to know about the project— from start to finish— in an easy to edit MSW format.

NEA's Read Across America: Join the Celebration! NEA's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on or around Dr. Seuss's birthday. NEA's Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, care givers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year. For information about what you can do to promote reading year-round click here.

JCEA/JPS Home & School Parenting Brochures (en Español también): Parents can view and download valuable information that will help their children improve their learning at home and at school. For a complete listing of helpful brochures and pamphlets, click here!

Parenting support available from NEA: JCEA's national affiliate, the National Education Association (NEA), provides two helpful resources for parents. Some of them are now available in Spanish!

Helping Your Teen Get the Most Out of High School, Helping Your Child Learn to Read, Raising Ready Readers and Keeping Them That Way, Choosing Supplemental Education Service Providers, Preparing Your Child for School, A Successful Kindergarten Transition, Testing at Your Child's School, Raising Scientifically Literate Children, Helping Your Child with Today's Math, Hey, Mom, I want to be an Engineer! Youth Suicide Information: As a result of the disturbingly high number of Jeffco youth suicides, many parents are seeking mental health information. You can get it from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's "Suicide Prevention and Intervention" program., click here! You can get additional information from the Jefferson Center for Mental Health, by clicking here!

School Accountability Report information: In September Colorado releases School Accountability Reports for every school district in the state. Typically JPS does very well. However, as educators, we are concerned that these reports, and the labels attached to them, will unduly stigmatize some schools and the students who attend them. We believe there are better indicators of school quality. Besides the information provided in the state School Accountability Reports, what other information should parents and community consider when evaluating the quality of their local schools? JCEA suggests you download two documents to help:

Cooperative Decision Making: In JPS, Cooperative Decision Making (CDM) is not a school committee; it is a school process. It is used to ensure there is the staff, parent and community involvement needed to "provide a quality education that prepares all children for a successful future." You can download a JPS publication regarding the CDM process in pdf format by clicking here.

Showtime movie provides opportunity to talk to teems: Bang Bang You're Dead (BBYD) is a Showtime Original Movie that deals powerfully with the issue of school violence. Showtime is a premium movie channel that is broadcast over satellite and cable channels. It is available in the metro-Denver area. This movie is not endorsed by the Association. However, we have worked with Showtime in an attempt to mitigate the possible negative impact the movie, and it's graphic content, may have on our own traumatized community. (Also, please note that neither the Jeffco PTA nor Jeffco Public Schools has endorsed this film.) JCEA has developed special guides for parents and teachers. JCEA believes that mentally healthy youth will deal appropriately with this movie. We also believe that through constructive dialogues, teachers and parents can help students gain a deeper understanding of the more positive themes of BBYD. As a result, we encourage parents to have a conversation with their children regarding this movie. Download the Parents' Conversation Guide by clicking here!
